Video Premiere: The Ark - Prayer For The Weekend

Oh. Wow. Can a video get any better than this? It’s like going to a really creative, edgy special effects movie. This is completely different than what I was expecting it to be, but so much better. A serious contender for video of the year.

Chantal Kreviazuk - Leaving On A Jet Plane

"I'm leaving on a jet plane, I don't know when I'll be back again"

Foregoing the usual new music related posts, I'm posting something with a bit more personal ties today. I'm leaving the UK after a three month stay tomorrow and flying back home to the States. I've met so many wonderful people here and it's very hard to leave some of them, for sure. While it's not quite as dramatic as this song, my departure is certainly affecting me more than it did the last time I came to visit/work in the UK. Look for new posts when I get home and am back to the Alienhits HQ computer where I can play around with graphics again and access a lot more new music.

Goodbye England!!

The Similou - Clouds

"I was born in the clouds for sure, get out of my head"

The Similou crafted one of my favorite pop songs of all time a few years ago with the punchy All This Love, and I was eagerly awaiting their return. Yesterday, the duo unveiled part one of a two part single. Clouds is the first new material the guys have put out for some time, and I am so glad to have them back. All the Similou trademarks are there. Lots of keytar, vintage synths and a glorious chorus. While it's not quite as upbeat as any of their previous singles, it's still a dance track, and a very interesting one at that. The chorus definitely steals the show, a theatrical, cheesy hook that revels in the inherent drama that good pop music should present. Plus, the duo have made this song available for free. It's amazing how many singles are given away free from Swedish artists, yet they still manage to have a booming music industry. We could learn something.

Rooney - I Should Have Been After You

"You set me up with your girlfriends, but none of them worked out for me"

Rooney's debut album was full of sun-kissed surfer rock that, although it didn't set the charts alight, proved to connect with a lot of fans. Given a second chance for chart domination, the group have come back with an album that wears its influences on its sleeves: a bit of the Beatles here, a sprinkle of Queen there. Their new single, When Did Your Heart Go Missing, is quite brilliant, and I've got another taster for you today ahead of the album's July 17th release date. I Should Have Been After You is one of the band's best songs to date. A pounding, near-operatic slice of seventies stlyed pop, it's the natural meeting point of Queen, The Feeling, and Robbie Williams. And, after about two and a half minutes of it, the track ascends into a swirling, space-age pomp strut that is most definitely the direction this band should be going.
