Rupaul - Responsitrannity

"I had to learn it on the radio"

This song should be nothing more than a novelty. I never really thought about listening to Rupaul's music for this very reason. Don't get me wrong, I think she's hilarious, but I expected a Rupaul album to play more like a comedy record than a real collection of pop songs. The lame title of this song doesn't help, either. Surprisingly, the album's full of striking club-influenced pop. Many of these songs could have been recorded by an artist like Kylie Minogue and nobody would bat an eye. The melody of this song is mature, shimmering electro pop that doesn't quite jibe with the silly title. It's a self-empowerment anthem (as most of the tracks on the album are) and, with slightly different lyrics, would have been taken completely seriously if recorded by any other artist. Listen with an open mind. I think you'll be very surprised!

I am obsessed with this song, and you're right about it mostly not sounding like a novelty record. I think This Is The Beginning is testament to that. I'm really ecstatic about this album - it's very solid, often euphoric and touching even.

I love this song, probably my favorite track on this album. But in all honesty I love this whole album. I also really love "Live forever". Is it only me or does this album have a different feel than the "Champion" album?? I do love the "Champion" album too and even listen to it nowadays lol! I love "Let's turn the Night" and "Devil Made me do it". Good job Ru, although I don't agree with your picking Raja as the winning queen in RDR3...

I am a long time reader of this blog and I'm glad you listened to RuPaul and included him in your repertoire. This is shimmering, self-empowering dance pop and you're right. What I like the most about Ru's music is that he's very consistent, much like Pet Shop Boys or Erasure, just not given the amount of credit he deserves as a musician. He used to perform in the late '80s with underground dance and alt acts before releasing his big debut album on Tommy Boy Records with "Supermodel of The World."

I, too, was surprised with how consistently enjoyable (and most of all refreshing) this album turned out to be. It's a solid collection of the "right" kind of dance pop. It's empowering, carefree and it takes me back to what I loved about his 2004 LP "RuPaul is Red Hot." "The Beginning," the title track and "Superstar" were immediate standouts for me.

The title of "Responsitrannity" sounds silly, sure, but at its heart is a sparkly, emotive and rewarding anthem. I like that he doesn't have to be crass or cutting to get that across, just sweet and uplifting. Makes me look at drag and its performers in a new way, not as tragic conflicted victims, but uplifting, rule-breaking heroes. He's really carved a niche of his own and admire that.

I picked up this album at a record signing. Truthfully, I bought it to support Ru Paul because I think he's an awesome person with a positive message. However, I was blown away by the music on Glamazon. I am absolutely obsessed with "Responsitrannity"--I think it could be the big song of the summer, with its great message and addictive tune. How can we get this song on the radio? I've been gifting it to friends on iTunes like mad--EVERYONE who likes upbeat dance music should buy it. It's great!
